The Xbox is a Home Video Game Console manufactured by Microsoft and is the first installment in the Xbox series of Video Game Consoles. It released on November 15, 2001 in America and in 2002 for Australia, Europe, and Japan. It competed with Sony's Playstation 2, Nintendo's Gamecube, and Sega's Dreamcast.
The Xbox had a record-breaking launch in America, selling 1.5 million units before the end of 2001. The system went on to sell a worldwide total of 24 million units, incuding 116 million in America. However, Microsoft was unable to make a steady profit off of the console, which had a manufacturing price far more expensive than it's retail price, losing over $4 billion during it's market life.
